Chhattisgarh Elections 2023: BJP Releases First List of 21 Candidates
In a strategic move ahead of the Chhattisgarh Assembly Elections 2023, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has revealed its inaugural list of 21 candidates. With the state’s Legislative Assembly comprising 90 seats, the upcoming polls are anticipated towards the year-end. This early announcement of candidates showcases BJP’s intent to lay the groundwork for a strong political campaign.
Prominent Names and Constituencies
Among the notable names in the list, Durg MP Vijay Baghel is set to contest from the Patan constituency. This contest will notably pit him against the incumbent Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Bhupesh Baghel, making it a direct face-off of political heavyweights. The list encompasses a diverse representation, featuring 5 women candidates and 10 individuals from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes backgrounds.
Strategic Meeting and Timely Announcement
The BJP’s Central Election Committee convened a meeting to finalize the candidate list. Top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah, and party chief JP Nadda participated in the decision-making process. Notably, this marks the first instance of BJP unveiling its candidates’ roster prior to the Election Commission’s announcement of election dates.
Prime Minister’s Call for Swift Action
According to online reports, Prime Minister Modi advocated for the expedited announcement of the candidate list. This strategic move would provide the party with ample time to strategize and set the campaign groundwork well ahead of the elections.
A Year of Intense Political Activity
Apart from Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram are also due for elections later this year. The BJP’s focus remains on Madhya Pradesh, where it is in power, and on challenging the existing Congress government in Chhattisgarh. The 2018 elections saw BJP secure only 15 out of 90 seats in the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly, while Congress clinched 68 seats, establishing a notable political landscape.
As the political arena intensifies, BJP’s early move to unveil its candidate list underscores its intent to navigate the electoral landscape strategically and with vigor.
