World Stroke Day 2024: When did this day start?
The World Stroke Organization (WSO) started an annual event in 2006, and in 2010, WSO declared stroke a public health emergency.
In 2009, WSO decided to move from a focus on a single awareness campaign to a year-round campaign. The year-round campaign was started to build sustainability and raise awareness of important stroke prevention and treatment issues.
What is Stroke?
A stroke can be defined as any assault on the brain caused by obstruction, constriction, damage to the blood-supplying tissue, or an infarction, as this is due to a pathology that interferes in various ways with arterial blood supply to the brain’s tissue.
Facts
More than 10 million people worldwide suffer a stroke every year. Out of these, stroke kills 5 million people, and another 5 million are left permanently disabled. Stroke is uncommon in people under 40 years. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the main cause of stroke is high blood pressure. But stroke also occurs in about 8 per cent of children with sickle cell disease.
