Dehradun: For the innovative experiments done in the field of fisheries in Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand has received the best state award in the Himalayan and Northeastern states category from the National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad.
This award was presented to Dr. BVRC Purushottam, Uttarakhand’s Secretary of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Department, by Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, Dairy, and Panchayati Raj, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lallan Singh. The award ceremony took place on World Fisheries Day, during an event in New Delhi on Thursday.
Many experiments were done like aquapark, fish market and contract with ITBP
The Uttarakhand Fisheries Department has undertaken numerous initiatives, including the construction of over 1,400 trout raceways for trout farming. Under the Matsya Sampada Yojana, they have also established a state-level aquapark and a wholesale market in Udham Singh Nagar. Additionally, the department has signed a contract with local fish farmers’ groups to supply fish to ITBP Dehradun.

All these initiatives are expected to boost the income of fish farmers in Uttarakhand. As a result of these efforts, the board selected Uttarakhand for this award. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami congratulated the department and fish farmers, stating that the government is making continuous efforts to increase the income of farmers and livestock farmers, with visible results.
Three-day capacity-building programme for 25 farmers in Haridwar
Recently, the College of Fisheries (CoF) at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University organized a three-day capacity-building programme for 25 farmers, including seven women entrepreneurs, from Haridwar. The Uttarakhand state-sponsored programme was coordinated by Haridwar Senior Fisheries Officer Jaiprakash Bhaskar. This training was specifically designed to enhance the farmers’ knowledge base. Under this training programme, trainees were introduced to new technologies and innovations in various aquaculture practices and systems, with a focus on carp polyculture, pangas catfish culture, freshwater prawn culture, ornamental fish culture, breeding, and seed production. They also learned about fish feed formulation and manufacturing.
