New Delhi: A 49-year-old woman was mauled to death by a tiger while she was collecting wood in the forest under the Pali sub-forest division of the Umaria district in Madhya Pradesh. The area falls in the Ghunghuti range.
This is the second tiger attack incident in three days that has led to the death of a person in the region.
Digendra Singh, the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of the Forest Department, said a group of 10 to 12 women from the village of Amiliha had ventured into the forest to gather firewood. While they made their way into the woods, one woman fell behind, and a tiger attacked her. She began screaming, but by the time her companions reached the spot, she had already died.
He further said that upon receiving information, the Forest Department officials swung into action and immediately reached the site. The incident occurred near the forest compartment number RF 239, Madari Dhaba, in the Ghunghuti range.
Forest dept announces compensation
The deceased has been identified as Bachni Bai, aged 49, wife of Thakurdin, a resident of Amiliha village. The police were notified, and an inquest was carried out. The Forest Department has assured that compensation according to departmental rules will be provided to the family members of the victim. Meanwhile, patrolling in the area has been stepped up, and announcements have been made in the surrounding villages alerting the locals to stay vigil.
It is to be noted that just two days ago, a leopard was severely injured in a train collision in the Pali sub-forest division. It was rescued after 14 hours. Three days ago, a tiger killed a villager in the Khitoli range’s Garhpuri beat. The animal attacks have seen a spike in recent times and sparked anger among the villagers. Concerns have been raised over the negligence of the Chief Forest Officer (DFO) of the forest division. The locals believe that the Forest Department must take immediate and proactive measures to combat the situation.
