Withdrawal of security of women wrestlers ‘miscommunication’, police tells Delhi court

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Friday informed a city court that the withdrawal of security of the women wrestlers, who are to depose against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, was a miscommunication and it has been rectified.

Court on Thursday directed Delhi Police to file a detailed report regarding reasons for withdrawal of security

The Delhi Police informed this to the court following a direction by the court yesterday to file a detailed report by today regarding the reasons for the withdrawal of the security of the wrestlers.

Court’s interim order on Thursday came on a plea moved by three wrestlers

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot had on Thursday passed an interim order on a plea moved by three wrestlers claiming that their security was withdrawn on Wednesday night and had directed the Delhi Police to immediately reinstate the security provided to a female wrestler who has accused Singh of sexual harassment.

The court, while passing the interim order, noted that the wrestler has to appear before the court on Friday to get her statement recorded in the sexual harassment case registered against Singh.

What did the court direct on Thursday?

“In the meantime, as an interim measure to ensure the safety of the complainant/victim no.4 (as per the list of witnesses), the DCP concerned is directed to make immediate and appropriate arrangements for her security until her deposition is complete and until further orders from this court. Accordingly, let a notice be issued to the DCP concerned with a direction to file a compliance report on the next date,” the court said in its order passed on Thursday and had posted the matter for Friday.

Delhi Police has withdrawn the security of the women wrestlers, wrestler Vinesh Phogat posted on Thursday

Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who recently reached final in the Paris Olympic but was disqualified from for being overweight ahead of the gold medal bout, posted on Thursday that the Delhi Police has withdrawn the security of the women wrestlers who are to testify against Singh before a court in the national capital on Friday.

“Delhi Police has withdrawn the security of the women wrestlers who are going to testify against Brij Bhushan in the court,” Vinesh wrote on social media platform X and tagged the Delhi Police, National Commission for Women and Delhi Commission for Women.

Wrestlers have accused Singh of sexual harassment

Wrestlers have accused Singh of sexual harassment. The Delhi Police last year filed chargesheet against Singh and a city court has framed charges of sexual harassment, intimidation and outraging the modesty of women against Singh in the sexual harassment case lodged by female wrestlers.
