Dehradun: With the end of Kedarnath by-poll, the ruling BJP and the main opposition Congress have now started their preparations for the local bodies’ elections which are likely to be held soon.
Both the parties are now in process of selecting its candidates to contest the elections for the post of Mayor of the Municipal Corporations and Chairman of the Municipality.
BJP to start survey work for the selection of its candidates
Sources said the BJP will soon begin survey work for the selections of right candidates for the local bodies’ elections. There are several contenders for contesting the local bodies’ elections within the BJP organizations. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, several leaders, who were eager to contest the local bodies’ elections, had joined the BJP.
The local bodies’ elections are a challenge for the Congress
On the contrary, the Congress has also given its focus on the preparations for the local bodies’ elections. Following the Congress party’s defeat in the Kedarnath by-poll, the party is taking the upcoming local bodies’ elections as a challenge for it to revive its old base across the state.
The Congress could not perform well in the 2018 local bodies’ elections
In the local bodies’ elections which were held in 2018, the Congress could not perform on the expected lines. Out of the total 11 Municipal Corporations, the party’s two candidates for the post of Mayor could be elected. The party’s 18 candidates were elected for the post of chairman of different municipalities.
The Congress has appointed in-charge of all districts
In its preparations for the local bodies’ elections, the Congress has appointed its in-charge of all the districts. Former minister Shurvir Singh Sajwan has been made in-charge of the Dehradun district. While the party has selected former AICC secretary Prakash Joshi as its in-charge of the Haridwar district, the party’s state vice president Suryakant Dhasmana will ensure proper preparations for the local bodies’ elections in Uttarkashi district.
The party MLA Madan Vishta, former minister Surendra Singh Negi, former minister Mantri Prasad Naithani and former MLA Jot Singh Gunsola have been made in-charge of Chamoli, Tehri, Rudraprayag, and Pauri respectively.
