Madurai: The Madurai branch of the Madras High Court on Thursday posed asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led Central government over the dealy in construction of Madurai AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in Tamil Nadu.

“It has been 5 years since the announcement that AIIMS will be set up in Madurai. What have you been up to all these years? What have you been doing for the last 5 years? When will the construction work start and when will it finish? The Court has posed some serious questions to the centre and ordered the Union government to file a written statement during the next hearing.
Don’t cite Covid pandemic as the reason for the delay: Court tells Centre
In response, the central government explained that there was a delay due to the covid pandemic lockdown and a tender has been issued for the construction works and the works will be completed by 2026. To which the judges said that the covid pandemic was over in 2022. The court has told the centre, not to cite covid pandemic as the reason for the delay in the construction of AIIMS in Madurai.
The observed in a public interest litigation (PIL) filed seeking an order to speed up the construction work of Madurai AIIMS.
Further, the Madurai branch of the madras High Court has adjourned the case by issuing orders asking the central government to file a written report as to when the construction work of Madurai AIIMS will start and when it will be completed.
Madurai AIIMS, its controversies and dealy
On February 28, 2015, the central BJP government announced that the ‘AIIMS’ hospital would be set up in Tamil Nadu. Howeve, the project has been mired in various controversies for the past 9 years, from the selection of the location to the allocation of funds.
Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone in 2019. But so far no construction work has been done except for the perimeter wall. Even though all the other AIIMS hospitals announced along with Madurai AIIMS have been completed, the question of when the construction work of AIIMS Madurai will start is yet to be answered.
