The BJP has rapped actress-turned-lawmaker Kangana Ranaut on the knuckles. The party has distanced itself from the latest statement the actress has made on the farmers’ agitation. However, this is not the first time the ‘Queen’ actress has courted controversy.
Controversy could be her middle name. Actor and Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut has a severe case of foot-in-the-mouth disease, it appears. In the latest incident, she has created a furore by comparing the upheaval in Bangladesh with the farmers agitation in India.
Kangana’s take on farmers
The actress claimed, “Bangladesh like anarchy could have happened in India, also in the name of farmers’ protest outside forces are planning to destroy us with the help of insiders. if it wouldn’t have been foresight of our leadership they would have succeeded”. If this wasn’t enough, Kangana reportedly said that ‘dead bodies were hanging and rapes taking place’ at the site of the farmers protests in India.
BJP’s response
The BJP has distanced itself from Kangana’s controversial utterance. In a statement it said Kangana’s words don’t reflect the party’s stance. Kangana Ranaut is not authorised to speak on policy matters on behalf of the party, added a BJP functionary. The BJP has directed Ranaut to refrain from making such statements in the future.
Opposition reacts
The Congress has demanded Kangana’s expulsion. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi said her statement is a gross insult to farmers. The Aam Aadmi Party’s Haryana unit has called her a habitual abuser of farmers and threatened to launch an agitation against her. Remember, Kangana was slapped by a CISF constable at Chandigarh airport over her derogatory remarks on those participating in farmer protests.
She is a serial offender when it comes to hurting people’s sentiments. Kangana first made headlines with her controversial statement on Karan Johar’s show in 2019 which she called him the flag bearer of nepotism.
In September 2020, After leaving for her home town in Himachal, the actress said that Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut had threatened her and asked her not to return to Mumbai. She said the city was resembling Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir.
In October 2020, after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, Kangana described Bollywood as a ‘gutter of drugs, exploitation and nepotism’ and announced that she will continue to expose the Bollywood mafia, a term she has often peddled in interviews.
In 2021, Kangana raked up another controversy declaring that India attained freedom in 2014, when the Modi-led government came to power.
Suspicious timing
Kangana’s film ‘Emergency’ is set to release on September 6. Her critics say she is trying to attract attention by grabbing headlines. This time around, she has spared her favourite punching bag that is Bollywood and trained her guns on farmer protests and linked them with the unrest in Bangladesh.
