New Delhi: In a fiercely contested battle for the New Delhi assembly constituency, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma delivered a stunning defeat to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supremo and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The high-stakes contest saw dramatic twists as both leaders alternated between leading and trailing during the intense vote-counting process.
However, as the final votes were tallied, Verma emerged victorious, cementing his status as a political heavyweight and dealing a significant blow to Kejriwal’s leadership.
All you need to know about Parvesh Verma
Parvesh Verma, a prominent figure in Delhi politics, belongs to a well-established political family. He is the son of the late Sahib Singh Verma, a former Chief Minister of Delhi and a senior BJP leader. His political roots extend to his uncle, Azad Singh, a former Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Born in 1977, Verma received his early education at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, and an MBA from the Fore School of Management. His political career began in earnest in 2013 when he won the Mehrauli seat in the Delhi Legislative Assembly. He later achieved national prominence by securing the West Delhi parliamentary seat in 2014 and retaining it in 2019 with a record-breaking margin of 5.78 lakh votes. Throughout his tenure as a Member of Parliament, Verma has served on key committees, including the Standing Committee on Urban Development.
Parvesh Verma’s ‘Remove Kejriwal, Save the Nation’ campaign
Verma’s victory followed a bold and controversial campaign under the slogan “Remove Kejriwal, Save the Nation.” He criticized the AAP government for failing to address key issues, such as pollution, women’s safety, and Delhi’s civic infrastructure. Verma was particularly vocal about the unfulfilled promise of cleaning the Yamuna River, a long-standing concern for the capital’s residents.
The New Delhi constituency also saw the participation of Congress candidate Sandeep Dikshit, adding complexity to the electoral battle. However, Verma’s strategic messaging and his ability to connect with voters proved decisive in overcoming Kejriwal’s established political stature.
