New Delhi: Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh will assume the role of Chief of the Air Staff on Monday, succeeding Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari, who is retiring after a three-year tenure. Air Marshal Singh, currently serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, will take up his new position today afternoon, taking the rank of Air Chief Marshal.
Born on 27 October 1964, Air Marshal Singh was commissioned into the IAF’s fighter pilot stream in December 1984. With nearly four decades of service, his experience spans a range of command, staff, instructional, and international appointments. He is a graduate of the National Defence Academy, Defence Services Staff College, and National Defence College.
A Qualified Flying Instructor and Experimental Test Pilot
A Qualified Flying Instructor and Experimental Test Pilot, Air Marshal Singh boasts over 5,000 hours of flying experience on both fixed and rotary-wing aircraft. Throughout his career, he has commanded an operational fighter squadron and a frontline air base.
As a test pilot, he led the MiG-29 Upgrade Project Management Team in Moscow and was the Project Director for Flight Test at the National Flight Test Centre, overseeing the flight testing of the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. His previous senior appointments include Air Defence Commander at South Western Air Command, Senior Air Staff Officer at Eastern Air Command, and Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command.
Defence ministry confirmed his appointment
The Ministry of Defence confirmed his appointment on Saturday, with the statement: “The Government has appointed Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh, presently serving as Vice Chief of the Air Staff, as the next Chief of the Air Staff, in the rank of Air Chief Marshal, with effect from the afternoon of 30 September 2024.
