Wellington: New Zealand’s big-hitting sensation Chad Bowes broke the world record for the fastest double hundred in List A cricket on Wednesday, reaching the milestone in just 103 balls. Bowes shattered the record held by India’s Narayan Jagadeesan and Australian Travis Head.
The South African-born Kiwi cricketer achieved the landmark while playing for Canterbury against Otago in the Ford Trophy – the domestic List A limited overs cricket competition in New Zealand.
Bowes now holds the record for the fastest double century in the 50-over format. The big-hitting opener was dismissed for 205 off 110 deliveries.

Jagadeesan and Head, the previous record holders had crossed the 200-run mark in 114 balls.
India’s Jagadeesan achieved the feat during his record-breaking 277 playing for Tamil Nadu against Arunachal Pradesh in the 2022 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Meanwhile, Head reached the landmark score for South Australia against Queensland in the 2021-22 Marsh Cup.
Who is Chad Bowes?
Born in Benoni, South Africa in 1992, Bowes led South Africa in the 2012 Under-19 World Cup and was teammates with Proteas’ star batter Quinton de Kock. He played for the domestic side KwaZulu-Natal before moving to New Zealand in 2015 due to South Africa’s domestic quota system.
After a seven-year domestic grind in New Zealand, Bowes made his ODI debut in 2023 against Sri Lanka in Auckland. Bowes has played six ODIs and 11 T20Is for the Kiwis, scoring a fifty each in both formats.
He missed out on making it to New Zealand’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
Bowes stormed to a century in 53 balls and missed breaking Ross Taylor’s record (off 49 balls) for the fastest hundred in the competition by just four balls.
He reached his half-century in 26 balls.

Laced with 27 fours and seven sixes, Bowes’ stunning knock powered Canterbury to 343 for 9 after they were put in to bat at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. In reply, Otago were bowled out for 103 as the hosts registered a massive 240-run win.
The 32-year-old also became the first player since Jamie How to score a double hundred in the Ford Cup. tournament’s history. How scored 222 for Central Stags in the 2012/13 edition of the tournament.
Bowes notched up his highest List A score in his 100th List A match.
