New Delhi: In a major dressing-down to the Uttar Pradesh Police, the Supreme Court on Thursday remarked that the cops in the state were ‘enjoying power’ and need to be sensitised. A bench comprising Justices Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan made these remarks while hearing a case againt the petitioner Anurag Dubey, who is facing several FIRs and was allegedly apprehensive about the chances that he might be slapped a new case if he joined the police probe.
The Apex court further added that the police appears to be ‘entering a dangerous area’ and warned them of drastic order if the petitioner was ‘touched’.
Why was SC furious over UP Police?
During the hearing, the bench also directed Dubey to abide by the notices issued to him and appear before the investigating officer for probe. SC also directed the police against taking Dubey into custody without prior information to the court.
“He must not be appearing because he knows that you will register another false case and arrest him there. You can convey your DGP the moment he (Dubey) is touched, we will pass such a drastic order he will remember his whole life. Every time you come with a new FIR against him! How many cases prosecution can uphold? It’s very easy to allege land-grabbing. Someone who purchased by a registered sale deed, you say land grabber! Is it a civil dispute or criminal dispute?,” said the SC bench as quoted by Live Law.
Who is Anurag Dubey?
Dubey alias Dabban, who hails from Farrukhabad, has multiple criminal case of assault and fraud registered against him. He is also booked in cases under NSA and Goonda Act. Anurag’s brother Anupam, a BSP leader, has also several cases against him.
