Wayanad: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, who is contesting the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll, remembered Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mother Teresa, during her campaign in the constituency on Monday. Addressing her supporters, she spoke of the time Mother visited her home when her father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated.
Thanking the people of the constituency for their love, Priyank Gandhi spoke about a boy whom she came across on the day of filing nominations. She added that during the conversation the boy told her that while his bother wanted to meet her, she could not walk. After she reached his home, Priyanka Gandhi got so much love from the mother as if she was her child and made her feel that she had a Wayanad too. She said the woman offered her a rosary which reminded her of Mother Teresa.
Priyanka Gandhi shares her experience with Mother Teresa
“My father had just died. After a few months, Mother Teresa visited my mother. I was having that day fever, so could not move out of the room. She came to meet me and put her hand on my head. She also gave me a rosary just like this mother. Mother Teresa also asked me to work with her. After a few years, I worked with her sisters. I used to teach kids and clean bathrooms. I also cooked food. I soon started understanding the pain of others. I also saw how the people of Wayanad helped each other during a landslide in Wayanad, which made me made me proud,” she told the gathering.
Priyanka contesting the election for the first time
Notably, it is for the first time that Priyanka Gandhi is contesting any election. The Wayanad seat was left vacated after her brother and former Congress President Rahul Gandhi won from both this constituency as well as Raebareli in Lok Sabha polls. He decided to leave the Wayanad constituency and announced Priyanka Gandhi as the Congress candidate for the by-poll. However, her name was officially announced just recently.
