New Delhi: A stampede broke out at the Sangam Nose area of Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj in the wee hours of Wednesday as millions of devotees make a scramble to take the holy dip on the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya.
After the stampede, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made a fervent appeal to the devotees to refrain from going to the Sangam Nose. The question arises that what is Sangam Nose, where a huge crowd is being seen. What is its importance?
What is Sangam Nose?
The name Sangam Nose is given due to the shape of this place. It is considered the most important place for bathing in Prayagraj. Most of the saints and sages take bath at this place. Devotees also give the most importance to bathing at this place.
Sangam Nose Area is the place where the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical river Saraswati meet. It is the confluence of the the holy rivers and that’s why there is a biggest rush of devotees at the place. It is the spot where the water of both the rivers in their different colour appears distinctly. While the water of Yamuna is light blue, the colour of Ganga water is slightly muddy.
The Administration and Irrigation Department, under IIT-Guwahati experts, has prepared an additional 2 hectares of space on the Nose for this year’s Maha Kumbh Mela. The area of the Sangam Nose has been increased so much that the area can accommodate around 630 parked four wheelers. The space of Sangam Nose has been increased considering the fact that more devotees are expected to throng the site this time. The area is equal to four football fields now.
According to the information, in 2019, arrangements were made here so that 50,000 people could take bath here every hour. As compared to 2019, the area has been expanded so much that it can accommodate 2 lakh devotees simultaneously and they can take bath in the Maha Kumbh every hour.
Kumbh Mela area is spread over 4,000 hectares of land. It has been divided into 25 sectors. For the Maha Kumbh, the administration has prepared 41 ghats on the Sangam coast. Of these, 10 are permanent ghats and the rest of the 31 ghats are temporary ghats.
