Kolkata: The Kolkata Police have arrested a college student for allegedly calling for assassination of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee. The girl is a second year BCom student and the police said that she tried to incite violence against the Chief Minister. The accused has been identified as Kirti Sharma.
Assassinate Mamata Banerjee like former PM Indira Gandhi
According to the police, Sharma, who goes by the handle “kirtisocial” on Instagram, allegedly encouraged others to assassinate Mamata Banerjee, just like former PM Indira Gandhi. In her post she wrote, “Shoot Mamata Banerjee like Indira Gandhi. If you can’t do it, I wouldn’t disappoint.”
Her post went viral in no time and reached some Trinamool supporters, who immediately alerted the police. The police began investigations and found that the accused had also revealed the identity of the PG medical student who was raped and killed at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident happened on August 9.
Talking about the case against Sharma, the Kolkata Police in an official statement said, “”A complaint was received regarding the accused person, having the Instagram ID ‘kirtisocial,’ who uploaded three Instagram stories related to the recent incident at RG Kar Hospital. The posts disclosed the picture and identity of the victim, which is highly offensive in nature. Additionally, the accused shared two stories containing offensive comments and life threats against the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. These comments are provocative and may create social unrest and promote hatred among communities.”
The Kolkata Police have been monitoring all social media posts in the wake of the brutal rape and murder of the PG medical student at the RG Kar Medical College. They had earlier summoned Trinamool MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray after he publicly demanded that the CBI interrogate the Kolkata police commissioner. Other than that former BJP MP Locket Chaterjee and 2 doctors were summoned for allegedly spreading rumours regarding the rape and murder case.
