New Delhi: Werder Bremen pulled off a major upset against Eintracht Frankfurt, the side that took the first spot in the standings after securing a commanding 6-0 win over SC Freiburg to move to the top of the table. Coming into the match full of confidence, Niko Arnautis’ side started brightly, displaying their attacking intent in the opening stages. Within the first 15 minutes, Frankfurt threatened with some slick passing, as Géraldine Reuteler had a goal ruled out for offside and Laura Freigang narrowly missed a chance to give her team the lead. However, despite their promising start Frankfurt struggled to break down a resilient Bremen side.
Reuteler and Weidauer miss early scoring chances
Reuteler and Weidauer both had golden opportunities to open the scoring but couldn’t capitalize. Bremen, coming off a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen almost found themselves behind when Reuteler left unmarked and took too long to take her shot in the 19th minute. Frankfurt missed the opportunity and could not capitalize on the Bremen’s lag.
Just a minute later, Weidauer was put through brilliantly by Mahmoud but Frankfurt goalkeeper Johannes stood firm in a crucial one-on-one and denied the chance to Bremen.
As Werder grew into the game pushing forward with more intent they left gaps at the back. This nearly cost them when Dunst sent a perfectly timed pass to the speedy Anyomi, who found herself one-on-one with Peng but couldn’t beat the Bremen keeper (32’), entering halftime deadlocked at 0-0.

Missed opportunities and Weidauer’s stunning strike
Within 15 minutes of the second half, Anyomi missed another golden opportunity to put Frankfurt ahead, hitting the crossbar while free in front of goal. In the 62nd minute, Peng denied Anyomi once again, winning their one-on-one duel. Peng also came up with a crucial save in the 74th minute, blocking Chiba’s powerful shot.
The hosts created numerous chances but paid the price for not converting them. On a swift counterattack, Weidauer unleashed a long-range shot that sailed over goalkeeper Johannes and nestled into the top corner giving Bremen a somewhat fortunate lead in the 75th minute.
