New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today appealed for calm and restraint in the wake of violence in Bangladesh following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Addressing the media, Banerjee urged people of all communities to remain peaceful and not take the law into their own hands. She said that the Governments of India and Bangladesh are working together to address any concerns and troubles faced by citizens
“I appeal to people of all communities with folded hands to remain calm and not engage in any communal behaviour or take the law into their own hands. If our brothers and sisters who are there face some trouble, the Government of India and the Government of Bangladesh will look into it. We will do what the GoI asks, ” CM Banerjee said.
CM warns against provocative remarks
Banerjee requested leaders of all political parties to refrain from posting inflammatory content or making provocative comments that may disrupt peace. The chief minister specifically cautioned BJP leaders against making inappropriate statements, citing that some have already posted insensitive content. Banerjee discussed the need for calm and peace, warning that developments in Bangladesh may have an impact in India as well.
“We are all concerned about the situation in Bangladesh but one must not write or post something under the influence of their emotions that may disrupt peace in Bengal or in the country. I will say this to everyone including the BJP. Some BJP leaders have already posted certain things, which I feel isn’t appropriate. I will also urge our leaders not to say or post any such thing. If there are some developments in the neighbouring country, there may be an impact in our country as well. We must remain calm and protect peace at all costs, ” she added.
