Kolkata: The Sealdah court awarded on Monday life imprisonment to convict Sanjay Roy in RG Kar rape and murder case of a young doctor. While announcing the punishment, the court also ordered the compensation of Rs 17 lakh for the victim’s family. However, the latter has refused to accept the compensation.
News agency ANI reported that the victim’s parents told the judge during the proceedings, “We don’t want compensation; we want justice.” The court found Sanjay Roy guilty in the case on Saturday and reserved the quantum of punishment for Monday.
Convict claims innocence in RG Kar rape and murder case
On being asked to speak on his defence in the court on Monday convict Sanjay Roy claimed that he was framed in the case and had nothing to do in the incident. “I have been framed. So much has been destroyed. I had a necklace of restraint around my neck. If I had done it, my rudraksh necklace would have torn. You’ve heard everything. It’s like anyone is doing whatever they want. When the CBI arranges a medical examination, they take you to multiple hospitals,” Roy said in the court.
Roy further claimed that he was falsely implicated in the court. He also claimed to have been tortured into signing “whatever they wanted”. “I have not done anything, neither rape nor murder,” he added. Earlier, the CBI wanted capital punishment for the convict, calling it the rarest of rare cases. The agency’s counsel said that society lost a doctor due to the crime.
Last year in August, the body of the victim was found inside RG Kar Hospital, where she used to work as a trainee doctor. During the probe, it was found that the young doctor was raped before the murder. The news of the doctor’s rape and murder led to anger across the country, with resident doctors even sitting on protests over the heinous crime. Civil society groups had also organised late night marches in Kolkata and several parts of the country.
