Kazan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India is committed to peaceful conflict resolution during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at the BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia. The two leaders greeted each other warmly, including a hug, as they discussed various issues, including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. At the summit, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, PM Modi praised the BRICS grouping for its growth, noting that numerous countries have expressed interest in joining.
“We have maintained communication with all parties involved in the Russia-Ukraine situation. Our stance has always been that dialogue can resolve conflicts. India advocates for peaceful solutions and is prepared to assist in fostering peace,” said PM Modi.
PM Modi’s second Russia visit in 2024
The summit is set to conclude with the adoption of the ‘Kazan Declaration,’ which will officially welcome five new members to the BRICS alliance. This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Russia this year; he previously attended the 22nd India-Russia Annual Summit in Moscow in July, where he held a bilateral meeting with President Putin and was awarded Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, at the Kremlin.
India-Russia ties
India and Russia enjoy a “special and privileged strategic partnership,” according to President Putin. He reaffirmed that the relationship between the two nations continues to evolve positively. Apart from that, India remains a significant purchaser of Russian oil, a fact that has drawn criticism from the West, particularly the US and its allies, who have been supporting Ukraine and attempting to restrict Russian trade. In response, India has maintained its position of sourcing oil based on favourable deals, benefiting its citizens.
