New Delhi: Premier League club Manchester United finally made the long-overdue decision of reliving Erik Ten Hag from his managerial duties at the club. The club’s search for Ten Hag’s successor is underway and that has landed the club in Lisbon, the home of their former player and Portuguese icon, Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo’s former club, Sporting CP is currently making the waves in Portuguese football, following their impressive start to the league campaign.
Sporting CP have started the season in brilliant fashion, winning all of their first nine league games with 30 goals scored and only two being conceded. The majority of the credit for their brilliant form at the start of the season belongs to their highly impressive manager, Ruben Amorim. The 39-year-old manager has been earning praise from across the globe for his efforts with the Portuguese outfit and has drawn interest from the two Manchester clubs.
Manchester United ultimately came calling after Ten Hag was sacked and it seems like that the manager is on the verge of joining the Red Devils. The two clubs agreed on a €10 million compensation for Amorim and he is said to have already accepted United’s proposal and project. When talking to a local news channel, a life-long Sporting CP fan couldn’t hold his emotions back after being told that his manager is set to leave the club.

Why is Ruben Amorim loved at Sporting CP?
The news of their beloved manager leaving the club for Manchester United has struck a chord with the fans of the club that showcases the deep, emotional connection they have towards their coach. The 39-year-old is fairly young in his managerial career but has already etched his name into the history books in his national capital. Amorim joined the club in 2020 and has since re-established the club as one of Portugal’s elite.
He guided the club to their first Primera Liga title in almost two decades when he won the Portuguese top-flight with Sporting CP in the 2020-21 season. His excellent work in the transfer market, development of academy players and their integration into the first team squad was what made the title win even more special. Players like Daniel Bragança, Gonçalo Inácio, Matheus Nunes, and Nuno Mendes were all promoted to the first team from the club’s academy.
Not only did he lead them to their first league title in 19 years, he finished that season having won the domestic treble with the Portuguese club. While this achievement in itself makes him worthy of being a Sporting legend, he then led the club to another league title in his tenure when he won the Liga in the 2023/24 season. Both of his title winning seasons yielded him the best manager of the season awards. Such amount of success in such a short time and the way he achieved it is what makes Amorim a fan-favourite in Lisbon.
