Prayagraj: Braving the bone-chilling cold, crores of devotees made a beeline to the Triveni Sangam to take a holy dip at the Mahakumbh for ‘Amrit Snan’ on Makar Sankranti. Similar scenes were witnessed on Wednesday as devotees chanting ‘Har Har Mahadev’ filled the banks of the holy confluence of rivers.
The Uttar Pradesh government has made elaborate arrangements for security and accommodation for Mahakumbh devotees besides deploying thousands of sanitation workers to keep the area clean. Tent cities have been set near the Triveni Sangam for those looking to stay on the banks and a range of accommodations are also available in the city area.
“The grandeur of Sanatan culture was seen on the banks of Sangam on the first Amrit Snan of Maha Kumbh. Crores of devotees earned virtue by taking Amrit Snan in Triveni and took the blessings of Mother Ganga,” the Mahakumbh’s official account on X said in a post.

Earlier on Tuesday, seers from various ‘akharas’ participated in the first ‘Amrit Snan’ at the Maha Kumbh, marking the occasion of ‘Makar Sankranti.’ Around 3.5 crore devotees took a dip at the Triveni Sangam on this auspicious day.
Leading the akharas were ash-smeared Naga sadhus, who captivated onlookers with their expertise in traditional weapons.
From skillfully wielding spears and swords to energetically playing the ‘damru,’ their performances were a vibrant celebration of ancient traditions, as per an official statement.
Alongside the male Naga sadhus, a significant number of female Naga ascetics also participated.
This edition of the Kumbh is being held after 12 years, though seers believe that the celestial alignments for this event occur only once in 144 years, making it even more auspicious. The fair will continue until February 26.
