Vinesh Phogat to get rewards and facilities of an Olympic medalist: Haryana CM Nayab Saini

New Delhi: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who announced retirement on Thursday following her disappointing disqualification from the 50 kg women’s final at the Paris Olympics, will be welcomed and felicitated “like a medalist” upon her arrival to her home state of Haryana, Chief Minister Nayab Saini has announced.

He also announced that the Haryana government will accord her a welcome along with all the rewards and facilities that are given to an Olympic medalist, the chief minister said while calling Phogat a “champion” as performed brilliantly and made her way into the wrestling final bout.

“Our brave daughter of Haryana, Vinesh Phogat, performed brilliantly and entered the finals of the Olympics. Due to some reasons, she may not have been able to play the final of the Olympics but she is a champion for all of us. Our government has decided that Vinesh Phogat will be welcomed and felicitated like a medalist,” Saini wrote in a post on X.

All the respect, rewards and facilities that the Haryana government gives to the Olympic silver medalist will be gratefully given to Vinesh Phogat as well. We are proud of you Vinesh!,” he added.

What rewards will Vinesh get from Haryana government?

According to its sports policy, the Haryana government awards Rs 6 crore to gold medalists, Rs 4 crore to silver medalists, and Rs 2.5 crore to bronze medalists in the Olympic Games.

Vinesh Phogat retires from wrestling

29-year-old Vinesh Phogat On Thursday announced her retirement from international wrestling, stating she no longer had the strength to continue. The decision came after she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight before Wednesday’s gold medal bout at the Paris Olympics, shared her decision on social media and sought forgiveness from her supporters.

Phogat made history as the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in the 50 kg event.

“Ma, wrestling has won, I have lost. Please forgive me, your dreams and my courage, everything is broken.” “I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I shall be indebted to you all. Forgive (me),” she wrote in a post on X.
