Passengers struggle amid chaos
Videos from the scene depicted passengers desperately trying to enter the crowded train, with parents carrying young children in their arms while trying to secure a spot inside. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Railway KPS Malhotra said that a large number of passengers were gathered on the platform at the time. The delay of two other trains—Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani—further contributed to congestion on platforms 12, 13, and 14.
“As per available information, 1,500 general tickets were sold, leading to an overwhelming rush. The crowd became uncontrollable, triggering a stampede-like situation near the escalator on platform 14,” Malhotra said.
