New Delhi: Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar on Tuesday hit out at the Opposition days after they issued no confidence motion against him. Dhankhar pointed out that he was surprised after reading their allegations. The motion was later dismissed by deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
“Former Prime Minister Chandra Sekhar once said that that vegetable knife cannot be used for bypass surgery. When I read the allegations, I was shocked. The notice was rusted and not even a vegetable cutting knife,” the Vice President said during his interaction with women journalists in the national capital.
People in a constitutional position not in position to settle scores: Dhankhar
People like him who hold constitutional posts are not in a position to settle scores. He added that those who hold constitutional posts are required to be “vindicated by commitment to sublimity, sterling qualities, as well as constitutionalism.”
‘Media facing a lot of challenges currently’
Speaking further, Dhankhar said that media currently faces several challenges, including “disruptive technologies”. It also faces situations where narratives are going to create a sensation. Further talking about the background behind the issue of the no-confidence motion, Dhankahar added that he had allowed some remarks made by Piyush Goyal on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to be read out. The step was taken on the basis that nothing can be beyond the purview of the House, said.
The vice president added that among the six links submitted by the Opposition included his criticism of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi’s comment that the Centre was looking to “delegitimise the judiciary” of the country. “I know she is a noble lady, but her name dragged in the constitutional position,” he said.
