Uttarakhand’s soldier gets cremated in his village 56 years after death in plane crash
Gopeshwar: The last rites of a soldier from Chamoli district in Uttarakhand were performed 56 years after his death in a plane crash. His remains were discovered on Wednesday by a rescue team.
The last rites of this soldier were performed in Kolpuri village in the Tharali area in the presence of a large number of relatives, locals and Army officials.
His body was found buried in snow by a search and rescue team
Jawan Narayan Singh Bisht, who served in the Army’s Medical Corps, was cremated with full military honours in his village in Chamoli district on Thursday. His body was found buried in snow by a search and rescue team looking for personnel missing since a 1968 Indian Air Force (IAF) plane crash near Rohtang Pass.
Wreckage and remains of the victims were lost in the icy terrain
Bisht was aboard an IAF AN-12 aircraft that crashed on February 7, 1968, while enroute from Chandigarh to Leh. For decades, the wreckage and remains of the victims were lost in the icy terrain. Recently, a search and rescue team recovered the mortal remains of four victims from the snow-clad mountains of Himachal Pradesh’s Rohtang, marking a significant milestone in one of India’s longest-running search operations.
Narayan Singh’s body was brought to his village
Wrapped in a tricolour, Narayan Singh’s body was brought to the village and kept at his residence for an hour before cremation for people to pay their last respects. Unfortunately, Narayan Singh Bisht’s wife Basanti Devi died in 2011. MLA Bhupal Ram Tamta and Tharali Sub-Divisional Magistrate Abrar Ahmad were also present at the cremation site.
Relatives expressed disbelief
Naryan Singh’s relative Jai Veer Singh expressed his disbelief upon hearing the news of the body being found, as the family had long lost hope. “I couldn’t believe my ears when I got the information. We were both happy and sad. We felt joy that he could finally be cremated with respect, but the news also brought back the pain of his loss,” he said.
