Dehradun: According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Dehradun, there may be spells of heavy rain in eleven districts of Uttarakhand on Tuesday. Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts may witness cloudy weather the whole day with no rain prediction.

Yellow alert sounded for rains in many districts

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in most of the districts like Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Champawat, and Nainital on Tuesday. Meteorologists warn that the persistent heavy rains until the end of August could trigger landslides in sensitive hill district areas. Bikram Singh, Director of the Meteorological Centre, has forecasted heavy rain and lightning in Uttarakhand on Tuesday.

A heavy rain alert was issued for 10 districts

On Monday, August 26, a heavy rain alert was issued for 10 districts in Uttarakhand, while light to moderate rain was anticipated in two districts. Moreover, heavy rainfall was predicted in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri, Dehradun, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar, Almora, Champawat, and Nainital. Meanwhile, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar were to see light to moderate rain.

Kedarnath pilgrimage was severely affected

While the rain is providing relief from the heat and humidity, it is causing problems in the hilly areas. The Kedarnath Yatra is being significantly affected by the rain. The district administration is working to make the affected routes passable for the Yatra. The damaged Gaurikund highway in Sonprayag also needs repairs, as the increasing number of pilgrims could cause issues. Heavy rains in the hilly areas have led to landslides and falling boulders, as well as damage to highways, footpaths, and bridges.

Pilgrims and tourists are advised to take precautions

The IMD forecasts that heavy rains may trigger rockfalls and mudslides in various areas. Intense rainfall could also lead to flooding and sudden surges in water flow in rivulets, causing bank erosion, overflows, and flash floods. Residents in landslide-prone areas should remain vigilant. Pilgrims and tourists traveling to Char Dham or other locations in the state are advised to stay alert and be cautious of steep slopes while traveling.
