Light to moderate rains are likely in some districts
Uttarakhand is once again under a yellow alert for rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday. Light to moderate rain is expected in parts of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Rudraprayag districts. Additionally, rain is likely in many areas of Tehri, Pauri, and Dehradun districts in the Garhwal region. In the Kumaon region, light to moderate rain is also anticipated in districts such as Bageshwar, Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar.
Heavy rains are severely affecting the normal life
Amidst heavy rain in the hilly regions, residents are experiencing significant disruptions due to increased landslides and rockfalls, which have damaged houses, buildings, roads, and highways. Overflowing rivers and widespread soil erosion have also caused fear among those living along riverbanks, with many homes submerged due to flooding.
According to the Meteorological Department, Dehradun is expected to have partly cloudy and sunny weather for the next few days. However, there may be one or two rounds of heavy rain at some places.
Badrinath Highway opened on the fifth day
Amid heavy rains and landslides, Badrinath Highway opened on the fifth day. This route was closed near Nandprayag on August 23 due to debris. However, vehicles were being allowed to move through the alternative route Nandprayag-Saikot-Kothiyasain.
People are advised to take precaution
As heavy rains are lashing the whole Uttarakhand, rockfall and mudslides may occur at many places. Additionally, spells of rain can produce flooding and sudden increase in water flow of rivulets which may result in bank erosion/overflow/flash floods as well. For safety reasons, people residing in vulnerable areas prone to landslides are to remain cautious. Along with this, pilgrims/ tourists travelling to Char Dham or other locations in the state to remain alert and keep a watch on steep slopes while travelling.
