Dehradun: Regional IMD has issued an orange alert for Uttarakhand’s three districts-Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Bageshwar on Tuesday when intense spells of rain along with lightning and thunderstorm are expected at most of the places. Meanwhile, heavy to heavy rains are also predicted for other districts in Garhwal region like Rudraprayag, Tehri, Pauri and Dehradun while Nainital in Kumaon region can witness intense spells of rain too.
Rest of the state is on yellow alert
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in Dehradun, the other districts in Uttarakhand are on yellow alert, indicating predictions of heavy to very heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning in isolated locations. According to Bikram Singh, Director, Indian Meteorological Department, Dehradun, there has been moderate to heavy rain activity across the state over the past 24 hours which has resulted in landslides and overflowing rivers across the state.
Impacts of intense rainfall in Uttarakhand
An orange alert is a weather warning indicating that severe weather conditions are expected. It serves as a call to be prepared and take necessary precautions. This alert level is typically issued for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, or other significant weather events that could potentially cause disruptions or pose risks to safety. In the context of Uttarakhand, an orange alert might mean heavy rain and thunderstorms with the possibility of flooding, landslides, and other hazards. It’s important to stay informed, avoid risky areas, and follow any safety instructions from local authorities.
Tourists and pilgrims are advised to take precautions
Due to the heavy rains, there is a risk of flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and near rivers. This weather could also trigger landslides, rockfalls, and mudslides in certain locations. Roads, highways, and bridges may become blocked or washed out as a result. Additionally, the intense rainfall could increase water flow in rivulets and streams, potentially causing bank erosion. Pilgrims and tourists traveling to Char Dham or other destinations are advised to stay alert and travel only if absolutely necessary.
Road blockages and decline in pilgrim influx due to heavy rainfall
Recent heavy rainfall across Uttarakhand has caused landslides in the hilly regions, leading to the blockage of roads and highways. Currently, 193 roads, including PWD roads, National highways, and PMGSY roads, are obstructed due to these landslides. As a result of the adverse weather conditions, the number of pilgrims visiting the state has decreased. On August 12, only 642 pilgrims visited Badrinath, 202 visited Kedarnath, 497 visited Gangotri, and 304 visited Yamunotri.
