Dehradun: After bright sunshine throughout the day, the weather changed in Dehradun and Mussoorie on Tuesday evening and heavy rains occurred at both places in Uttarakhand. This downpour led to dense fog like situation in Mussoorie and increasing cold in the area.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a yellow alert for heavy rains and landslides in Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts. Along with this, light to moderate rains were predicted in most parts of the state. Additionally, IMD has instructed people to be cautious in landslide prone areas.
A yellow alert for heavy rains in eleven districts
For Wednesday, the IMD has sounded a yellow alert in eleven districts for heavy rains and landslides. Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar Almora, Champawat and Nainital can see heavy rains today. Whereas, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar may see clear weather today.
Landslide on Dehradun-Mussoorie highway
After heavy rains, a landslide occurred near Kolhu Khet on the Mussoorie-Dehradun highway late on Tuesday evening. After this, a traffic jam of about two kilometers occurred due to the closure of the road.
247 roads closed due to rain in the state
Due to continuous heavy rains across Uttarakhand, over 247 roads have been blocked. Following Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s directive to reopen the closed roads within two days, agencies managed to clear 67 roads on the first day. According to the state emergency operations center, the highest number of road closures are in Champawat district with 58 roads blocked, followed by Pauri Garhwal with 26, Chamoli with 22, Pithoragarh with 20, Nainital with 14, Rudraprayag with 10, Tehri with 9, Uttarkashi with 2, and Haridwar with 1 road closed.
Over 3000 vehicles stranded on Badrinath highway
Uttarakhand Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman mentioned that landslides are causing frequent road closures and reopening. Approximately three thousand vehicles were on the Badrinath route, and passengers were stranded when the road closed in the morning. However, the road was later reopened for traffic.
