Dehradun: The continuous torrential rain in various districts of Uttarakhand has increased the difficulties of the people. On Thursday, Badrinath and Kedarnath highways were blocked due to overnight heavy rains.
Amid heavy downpour in areas like Tehri, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh, the rivers are in spate due to increased water level. Therefore, problems like land erosion and landslides are arising. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of heavy rain in many districts of the state till September 30, which may worsen the situation.
Badrinath highway was blocked near Chatwa Peepal
In Chamoli district, continuous rain since last night has disrupted life. The Badrinath highway was blocked by debris falling from the hill in the Chatwapipal area, causing significant trouble for pilgrims and locals. The National Highway Authority managed to restore traffic after several hours. Although administration and relief teams are monitoring the situation, ongoing rain is making relief work challenging.
Kedarnath highway was blocked near Narkota
In Rudraprayag, the Rishikesh-Badrinath-Kedarnath National highway has been blocked for traffic near Narkota which was opened after a long effort of four hours. Still the situation near Narkota is critical as this stretch is likely to close again due to boulders still rolling down from the hills due to incessant rains.
Damaged roads in Tehri district
Heavy rain since late last night in the Ghansali area of Tehri district has dangerously raised the water level of the Dharma Ganga river. Consequently, a Pokland machine working to clear the road near the river has become stuck. Sanoop Singh Rana, the village head of Budhakedar, reported that the continuous rain has severely impacted daily life. The Budhakedar-Pinswad motorway, under construction by the PMGSY department near the market, has also suffered damage due to river erosion. Increasing incidents of roads being washed away and land erosion along the riverbank have halted the movement of people in the area.
Warning issued in Bageshwar and Pithoragarh
On Friday, the Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for heavy rain for all the districts including Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts, urging residents to stay alert and move to safer locations. There is a risk of landslides and road blockages, prompting the Disaster Management Department to be on standby.
Heavy rain is also expected in Dehradun, Haridwar, and other districts, leading to reports of waterlogging and traffic disruptions in many areas. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of rain in various districts of the state till 30 September.
Government and administration alert
The Uttarakhand government and the district administration have taken immediate steps to deal with the situations arising due to rain. Meanwhile, Disaster management teams have been deployed in all sensitive areas and people are being advised to remain cautious. The administration is constantly monitoring the water level of the rivers and the situation of landslides.
