Dehradun: With the increase in heat in the last few days, the weather took a turn on Wednesday and from noon onwards it rained heavily in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand and other parts. After this, there has been some decrease in the temperature and people have got relief from the heat.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Dehradun has sounded a yellow alert for heavy rains and thunderstorms for all the thirteen districts in Uttarakhand for the next four days. Very intense spells of rain accompanied by lightning and gusty winds have been predicted from Wednesday to Sunday.
Weather forecast for today
It has been raining heavily in Dehradun since Wednesday afternoon and it is still continuing. According to the Director of Meteorological Centre, Bikram Singh, most areas of Dehradun may remain partly cloudy on Thursday and there are chances of heavy showers with thunder and lightning. Moreover, there is a possibility of heavy spells of rain and lightning in the hilly parts of Kumaon region.
Rains brought relief from sweltering heat
Heavy rain prediction in the state has brought a relief for the people in Uttarakhand who have been facing a sweltering heat amid soared mercury caused by a dry spell. Even it has broken the records of the last 35 years when mercury reached beyond 33 degree Celsius in September.
Waterlogging in capital Dehradun
Due to the sudden heavy rain in the Wednesday afternoon, most areas of the Dehradun city have become waterlogged. The main roads are submerged and the water from the drains is flowing on the roads.
A five-year-old girl swept away into a stream
Due to heavy rainfall, the roads of Dehradun were flooded and rivers and streams were in spate. Meanwhile, a five-year-old girl fell into a stream and was swept away. On Wednesday afternoon, the Lakhi Bagh Police Station of City Kotwali received information through the control room that a girl had fallen into a drain near the under-construction railway over bridge in Madrasi Colony. The SDRF and police started looking for the girl, but the girl could not be traced till late evening.
Maximum temperature has decreased by three to four degrees
The heavy showers that started suddenly created chaos on the roads. The rain drenched the people of Doon. Due to the rain, many areas of the city were waterlogged and rivers and streams of the city also overflowed. Due to the rain, the maximum temperature has decreased by three to four degrees Celsius in most areas including Doon.
Bhimtal recorded the highest rainfall
On Wednesday, 36 mm rainfall was recorded in Doon within about an hour. Whereas, Bhimtal recorded the highest rainfall of 45 mm, Rishikesh 25 mm, Jolly Grant 22 mm, Nainital 16 mm.
