Dehradun: At the request of the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, extra water will be released from the Tehri Dam reservoir to ensure a sufficient water level in the Ganga River during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
Currently, the Tehri Hydropower Development Corporation (THDC) is releasing 200 cusecs of water every day into the Ganga River. However, more water will be released after January 20 as Maha Kumbh is set to begin on January 13. Water will be released for the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh, 1000 km away from the Tehri Dam.
Tehri Dam administration is preparing to release additional water for Prayagraj Maha Kumbh 2025
An estimated 40 crore devotees are expected to reach Prayagraj for a dip in the Maha Kumbh. The Tehri Dam in Uttarakhand is also collecting water in its 42 square kilometre area Tehri lake, and the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department has contacted the Tehri Dam administration to ensure there is no shortage of water during the Kumbh. The Tehri Dam administration is now preparing to release additional water for Prayagraj on January 20. However, the exact amount of water to be released is yet to be decided as the THDC is awaiting the demand specifications from the UP-Irrigation Department.
200 cusecs of water are being released from Tehri Dam every day
During the winter season, water freezes or decreases due to snowfall and other rivers, which affects the Ganga River as well. In such a situation, water will be released from Tehri to ensure there is no shortage of water in Prayagraj, allowing water to reach the devotees easily. THDC executive director Dr. LP Joshi has provided information about a letter received by THDC from UP Irrigation department about releasing water after January 20. Currently, 200 cusecs of water are being released from Tehri Dam every day. On the demand of the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department, the Tehri Dam Administration stated that water from the dam will be released for Prayagraj as needed.
