Dehradun: Uttarakhand’s urban development department is likely to sign an agreement with the THDC India Limited (Tehri Hydro Development Limited) to set up two plants for generating electricity from garbage in Dehradun and Haridwar cities.
The THDC India limited will make an investment of about rupees 400 crores for this project. This proposal is under consideration at high-level in the state government.
Agreement between the urban development department and the THDC may be signed on December 25
The Urban development department may sign the agreement with the THDC India Limited on the Sushasan Diwas on December 25. As per one estimate, both the plants will consume about 1500 metric tonnes of waste. To ensure the regular supply of waste to the proposed plants, neighbouring cities will also be linked to these plants.
Two such plants are functional in Mussoorie and Rudrapur
Currently, two such plants are functional in Mussoorie and Rudrapur and they continue to generate electricity. Rudrapur-based waste-to-energy plant currently generates six kilowatt of electricity per day by using 30 tonnes of waste. The plant is also helpful in the preparation of organic fertilizer. The Mussoorie-based plant, which is run on PPP model, has the capacity of disposing 8 tonnes of waste per day and it is used in preparing biogas which is helpful for running generator sets.
The government is to speed up its Waste-to-energy campaign
Encouraged by the success of these experiments, the state government is all set to speed up the Waste-to-energy campaign. The government has selected two sites- one in Dehradun’s Shishambada area and another in Haridwar’s Sarai area, to set up two plants for generating electricity from the garbage.
The THDC India Limited may invest Rs 400 crores to set up two plants
The government is seeking help from the THDC India Limited to set up the two plants. Currently, the urban development department and the THDC India Limited are discussing different aspects of the proposed plants, including proper availability of the wastes. Both have agreed on several points. The THDC India Limited is expected to make an investment of about Rupees 400 crores to set up the two plants.
