Dehradun: Former MLA from Khanpur Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion was sent to judicial 14-day custody after being produced before a court in Haridwar on Monday. He was arrested by the Haridwar police in connection with the Roorkee firing incident on Sunday. Apart from the former MLA Champion, his four supporters-Kuldeep. Ankit Arya, Ravi, and Monti Panwar- were also sent to 14-judicial custody.
The court granted bail to the independent MLA from Khanpur Umesh Kumar and his four supporters- Saiyad Ali, Rakib, Abhishek, and Sani Kumar
Clash between former and existing MLAs of Khanpur
The rivalry between former MLA Champion and current MLA Umesh took a serious turn with both the sides attacking each other’s office on Sunday. The police swung into action and arrested both the leaders and their supporters.
Cancellation of firearm licenses
Apart from arresting both the political rivals- Champion and Umesh, the Haridwar police also recommended to the administration for the cancellations of their firearm licenses. On Monday, the district magistrate, Haridwar, cancelled nine firearm licenses issued in the name of Champion and his family members.
Correspondence with Dehradun for cancellation forearm licenses
According to a press release, issued by the Haridwar police, Correspondence has been made with the district magistrate, Dehradun, for the cancellation of the firearm licenses issued in the name of Khanpur MLA Umesh by Dehradun district administration.
According to police, both the former MLA Champion and the current MLA Umesh were taken into custody based on the complaints filed by both the sides. The police claimed strict action was taken against both the groups following the zero-tolerance policy adopted against crime by the state government.
Rivalry since 2022 assembly polls
In the 2022 assembly polls, Champion’s wife Rani Devyani contested as BJP nominee from Khanpur against the MLA Umesh. She stood at third position. Umesh defeated his nearest rival and BSP nominee Ravindra Singh. Since the 2022 assembly polls, former MLA Champion, and current MLA from Khanpur Umesh have been political rivals.
