Dehradun: Cyber fraudsters defrauded an army nurse by making an IVR call to her when she was on leave from the United Nations Mission. For duping this nurse, these fraudsters pretended to be CBI officers and threatened the nurse of being involved in a fraud case and then digitally arrested her and defrauded her of lakhs of rupees. When realised the scam, the victim made a complaint to the police and a case was registered against the unknown accused in Raipur police station.
The police have started investigating the case
A nurse Neetu Singh, resident of Sainik Colony Balawala and working in Military Nurses Services (MNS) wing of the Indian Service, has lodged a complaint that she is currently posted in the United Nations Mission and had come home a few days ago on a 28-day leave. On August 17, she received an IVR call, in which she was told that her number was being blocked and to press 9 for more information. When the victim pressed 9, a person spoke to her, claiming to be an officer of a mobile company.
Woman digitally arrested
The scammer informed the victim that a phone number had been registered under her ID on July 15, which was allegedly linked to illegal activities. He mentioned an FIR against her. Later, a man in uniform, identifying himself as CBI Inspector Rajesh Mishra, claimed her account number was connected to the Naresh Goyal fraud case, warning her of imminent trouble. He instructed her to stay online and interrogated her, threatening that the court had all the evidence against her. He also warned that her bank account would be frozen and that her money was involved in money laundering. All these threats were made during online video calls, preventing her from leaving.
Approached the police after realizing fraud
Frightened by the threats, the victim deposited ₹15.09 lakh into the accounts specified by the scammer. Upon further investigation, she discovered that the individual was neither a telecom official nor a CBI officer, but a cyber fraudster. Raipur Police Station in-charge Pradeep Negi stated that a case has been registered against the unknown perpetrator based on the victim’s complaint, and an investigation is underway. Additionally, efforts are being made to gather information about the accounts where the money was transferred.
IVR (Interactive Voice Response) call
Cyber fraudsters are cheating people these days by making IVR calls on every number. IVR call is a computer generated call, it is like talking to a company or customer care.
