Dehradun: 52 Gadhs (forts) of Uttarakhand’s Garhwal region, which had their own identity in ancient times, will be developed as tourist spots.
The state government is working out a plan for the conservation and restoration of these historical forts. The state government aims to attract tourists as well as make the future generation about the glorious past.
District tourism officers will submit a report about the condition of the fort and their history
The state government has decided to renovate these forts which are currently present in the form of remains. The tourism department has already initiated steps to work out a plan for the renovation of these 52 forts located in the Garhwal region. All the district tourism officers have been asked to send detailed reports containing the condition of these forts and their history. Later, the steps will be taken to increase the tourist facilities at these forts.
52 forts had their distinct identities in the history of the region
In the past, the 52 forts had distinct identities in the Garhwal region. Perhaps, it was because of the existence of these forts that the region was named as Garhwal. As per the local history, the kings, who ruled the fort, were called “Gadhpati”. It is believed that these forts were in existence till the 14 centuries.

One such fort of Chandpur Garhi is under the archaeology department from the viewpoint of conservation. The tourists who visit Adi Badri and Gairsain, always prefer to see this fort. The development of these forts as tourist spots will also ensure enhancement of tourist facilities in the nearby villages. The 52 forts include Chondkot, Nayal, Ajamir, Kanda, Devalgarh, Lodgarh, Badhangarh, Lohabagarh and Top.
Tourism minister Satpal Maharaj said the government is under plan to renovate these forts
Uttarakhand tourism minister Satpal Maharaj told reporters that all the 52 forts of Garhwal region are in existence even today. He added the tourism officers of all the districts have been asked to provide a report about the condition of all the forts in their areas concerned, their history, the steps to be taken by the government for renovation and development of these forts.
