Uttar Pradesh: Sub Inspector demands ‘potatoes’ as bribe to settle case, suspended

Kannauj: A Sub-Inspector in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj was suspended for allegedly demanding “potatoes” as bribe. Potato was a term used to refer to bribes, said reports. It was kind of a code word. The cop who asked for the bribe was identified as Ram Kripal Singh. An audio of the man demanding the bribe has gone viral on social media.

Kannauj SP suspends accused SI

According to a report in NDTV, the SP of Kannauj Amit Kumar, has ordered the immediate suspension of the Sub Inspector who asked for the bribe. The accused is posted at the Bhawalpur Chapunna Chowki, under Saurikh police station. A probe has also been ordered against the accused.

In the audio clip the cop can be heard asking a farmer for “5 kgs potatoes”. To this the farmer replies that all he can offer is “2 kgs of potatoes”. This makes the inspector angry and he once again reiterates his demand for 5 kgs of potatoes. The deal is finally struck at 3 kgs.

Describing the case and the action taken, the Kannauj Police on its social media platform, ‘X’ said, “In the above case, SI Ramkripal has been suspended with immediate effect on 07.08.2024 by Superintendent of Police, Kannauj after being found guilty prima facie. He has been suspended with immediate effect. Departmental proceedings have been initiated.” The police also informed that Kamlesh Kumar, Circle Officer, City, Kannauj will be leading the investigations against Ram Kripal Singh.
