Bhubaneswar: Odisha, nestled in the heart of East India, is often referred to as the nation’s growth engine. Its immense potential lies in its mineral wealth, tourism appeal, and cultural legacy, making it a critical player in India’s development journey.
Inaugurating the ‘Utkarsh Odisha Make in Odisha Conclave 2025’, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted this promise, stating, “Odisha represents the essence of originality and the aspirations of Bharat.” His words reflect the pivotal role the State is poised to play in the making of Vikshit Bharat.
A wealth of minerals
Odisha is a powerhouse of mineral resources. It is home to over 35 per cent of India’s iron ore reserves, 96 per cent of chromite, and a lion’s share of nickel, coal, and bauxite reserves. This vast resource base positions the State as a cornerstone for India’s industrial and manufacturing sectors.
Over the years, Odisha has attracted investments in steel, aluminum, and power industries, reinforcing its industrial foundation. Yet, much of this mineral potential remains underutilised. The global shift toward renewable energy offers an opportunity for Odisha to align its policies to meet global demand for minerals like bauxite and nickel, essential for green technologies. By doing so, the State could emerge as a global supplier in the electric vehicle and renewable energy value chains.
The ‘Utkarsh Odisha, Make in Odisha’ initiative has already catalysed investments worth billions. Moving forward, sustainable mining practices, robust infrastructure, and streamlined regulations will be critical to fully harnessing this wealth.
Unlocking Odisha’s tourism potential
Odisha offers a unique blend of spiritual sanctity, architectural brilliance, and natural beauty. The iconic Rath Yatra at Puri, the Sun Temple of Konark, and the heritage temples of Bhubaneswar symbolise Odisha’s deep cultural and spiritual roots. These landmarks attract millions of visitors annually, cementing the State’s place on the global tourism map.
However, Odisha’s potential extends far beyond religious tourism. Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, and the lush forests of Similipal are ecological treasures that could attract eco-tourists and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. Bhitarkanika National Park, with its dense mangroves and diverse fauna, offers opportunities for adventure tourism.
Despite its attractions, Odisha’s tourism infrastructure needs significant upgrades. Enhanced connectivity, world-class hospitality, and strategic marketing campaigns can unlock Odisha’s potential, positioning it as a top destination for both domestic and international tourists.
The glorious heritage
Odisha’s historical legacy is as vibrant as its natural beauty. Once a thriving center of maritime trade, the State’s ancient ports like Tamralipti and Manikapatna connected India with Southeast Asia. The Kalinga Empire, known for its maritime and cultural prowess, laid the foundation for Odisha’s rich history of trade and cultural exchange.
Odisha’s art, crafts, and textiles — such as Pattachitra paintings and Sambalpuri sarees — are timeless treasures. Initiatives like the Bali Jatra festival not only celebrate the State’s maritime legacy but also promote its unique crafts, creating opportunities for local artisans.
As PM Modi observed, Odisha represents the originality and aspirations of Bharat. This spirit is embodied in the resilience and entrepreneurial energy of people of the State.
Vision of Vikshit Bharat
PM Modi’s vision of transforming India into a developed nation by 2047 hinges on States like Odisha playing a leading role. With its natural resources, skilled workforce, and growing infrastructure, Odisha is well-equipped to contribute significantly to this vision.
The ‘Utkarsh Odisha Make Odisha Conclave 2025’ is a platform for showcasing the State’s potential. Recent investments in IT, renewable energy, and agri-business sectors demonstrate Odisha’s ability to diversify its economy beyond minerals. Bhubaneswar, already a smart city, is emerging as a hub for technology and innovation.
Furthermore, Odisha’s emphasis on skill development is transforming its youth into a dynamic workforce equipped to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving economy. By investing in vocational training programs, establishing skill development centers, and fostering partnerships with industries, the State is preparing its young population for opportunities in diverse sectors such as technology, manufacturing, tourism, and renewable energy.
Road to sustainable growth
Despite its potential, Odisha faces challenges that must be addressed to unlock its full potential. Infrastructure gaps, environmental concerns, and regulatory delays often hinder progress. To overcome these hurdles, a collaborative approach involving the government, industry, and local communities is essential.
Sustainability should remain central to Odisha’s development strategy. Mining and industrial activities must coexist with efforts to preserve the State’s ecological balance. Empowering rural and tribal communities will also ensure inclusive growth, allowing the benefits of development to reach the grassroots.
The Mohan govt’s initiative
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Majhi, Odisha has embarked on an ambitious path of transformation, focusing on inclusive and sustainable development. The Mohan government’s proactive policies have aimed at creating a business-friendly environment while prioritising the welfare of the State.
From implementing ease of doing business reforms to creating an atmosphere for significant investments in sectors like steel, renewable energy, and infrastructure, the Mohan government is facilitating the industrial growth.
Additionally, its commitment to empowering rural and tribal communities through skill development, education, and healthcare initiatives has ensured that the benefits of progress reach every corner of the State. This balanced approach of development and welfare exemplifies the Mohan government’s dedication to unlocking State’s true potential and contributing to the vision of a Vikshit Bharat.
Dawn of a bright future
Odisha is on the cusp of a transformative era. As PM Modi aptly said, the State is celebrating its glorious legacy while charting a path to unparalleled development. With its rich mineral wealth, untapped tourism potential, and deep cultural roots, Odisha is poised to become a driving force in India’s growth story.
The journey ahead requires vision, determination, and collaboration. By focusing on sustainable development, empowering its people, and leveraging its unique strengths, Odisha can achieve unprecedented heights. The time has come for the State to reclaim its position as a global trade hub, a cultural powerhouse, and an economic leader.
