New Delhi: A woman from Uttar Pradesh allegedly poisoned her husband just hours after completing the Karwa Chauth fast, traditionally observed for a spouse’s long life. The incident took place in Kaushambi district, where 32-year-old Shailesh Kumar was reportedly poisoned by his wife, Savita, who suspected him of being involved in an extramarital affair, according to officials from Kada Dham police station.
On Sunday, Savita had been fasting as part of the Karwa Chauth ritual, praying for Shailesh’s longevity, while Shailesh himself had been engaged in preparing for the occasion since the morning. Later that evening, during the breaking of the fast, a quarrel broke out between the couple, but it seemed to be resolved shortly thereafter.

They shared a meal and Savita then sent Shailesh to the neighbour’s house, only to flee the scene afterwards. Shailesh’s brother, Akhilesh, said that Shailesh was rushed to a hospital, where he recorded a video accusing Savita of poisoning his food. Shailesh succumbed to the poisoning while under treatment.
Kaushambi Superintendent of Police, Brijesh Kumar Shrivastava, confirmed the case, saying that the crime occurred in Ismailpur village following a domestic dispute. Savita has since been arrested, and Shailesh’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
Jaipur couple die by suicide
In another incident, a 35-year-old woman, Monika, died by suicide in Jaipur after a heated argument with her husband, Ghanshyam Bunkar (38), who arrived home late on Karwa Chauth. After the dispute, Monika left home and jumped in front of a train. Ghanshyam, deeply disturbed by her death, returned home and hanged himself with her saree. Before taking the step, he sent a WhatsApp message to his brother, expressing despair and providing instructions for his work. The Jaipur Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident, which occurred in the Harmada area on October 20.
