Kanpur: In a shocking incident, junior students were allegedly beaten mercilessly by their seniors for not listening to their instructions to remove clothes during ragging in the Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU). The police have filed a case against eight final-year students on the charge of an attempt to murder.
Sharing the details, the police said the FIR was registered against the senior students by a third-year student of BTech Electronics under BNS sections 109 (attempt to murder), 115 (2) voluntarily causes hurt, 125 (an act so rashly as to endanger human life), 191 (2) rioting, 351 (3) criminal intimidation and 352 (intentionally insults) as also ragging charges. Those named in the case are all fourth-year students.
Third-year student files FIR
The student in his FIR alleged that one of his classmates got a call from seniors to come with him and another classmate to enjoy a ‘birthday party” which was “code language” for ragging. The situation got out of hand when the seniors asked them to take off their clothes, which third-year students refused. “We told them that they should be spared as they had already faced ragging in the first year of their admission. Angry over the refusal, the seniors came with sticks, belts, and iron rods and started beating them,” the FIR filed by the student said.
Accused student asked to appear before police for questioning
The police further said that instructions have been issued to the accused student to appear before them for questioning. The university administration has also started an inquiry in the matter to find out whether it was the case of ragging case or not, an official said. According to him, first-year students are victims of ragging in the case. However, in this case, a third-year student filed an FIR against final-year students.
