Gangtok: The Centre today approved healthcare infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 300 crore for Sikkim following a review between Union Minister for Development of North East Region (DoNER) Jyotriaditya Scindia and Chief Minister PS Tamang in Gangtok.
The meeting, held at the Samman Bhawan in the state capital, was focused on boosting the development projects in the state, especially in the wake of extensive caused by the recent natural calamities.
Projects approved for Sikkim
The Union Minister also announced that the Donor Ministry will organize three significant events for the development and cultural promotion of North-East states. These include a Bankers’ Conclave, which will be chaired by Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as the North East Investors’ Summit and the Ashtalakshmi Handloom Summit.
During the meeting, Union Minister Scindia also approved three key healthcare initiatives proposed by CM Tamang. These include Rs 170 crore to build a new medical college, Rs 15 crore for medical equipment at the Namchi district hospital and Rs 6 crore to establish a hospital in Mangan.

The funds from the Centre will help enhance the healthcare infrastructure across both urban and rural areas of Sikkim. Scindia reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to supporting Sikkim’s growth, promising full cooperation from the Ministry to expedite projects and improve medical services in the state.
This initiative aligns with the national agenda to boost infrastructure development in the North-East region. The meeting also provided important guidelines for the successful implementation of these projects, with the Union minister vowing unwavering support to Sikkim’s development initiatives.
Scindia surprises by speaking in Nepali
Addressing a joint conference with Tamang after the meeting, the Union minister took people by surprise after he spoke a few words in Nepali, the most spoken language in Sikkim. He said this was his first visit to the northeastern state and he believes the chief minister and his government will write a new chapter in the state’s development.
