‘Undermining our democratic institutions’: BJP slams Khurshid’s ‘Bangladesh-like protest’ remark

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party slammed Congress party and former Union minister Salman Khurshid for saying that violent anti-government demonstrations that are taking place in Bangladesh could also potentially occur in India, although there’s a semblance of normalcy.

Hitting out at Khurshid, BJP national spokesperson Sambit Patra said that the Congress party was trying to “spread anarchy” and “ruin India through backdoor tactics”. “Leaders, including Shashi Tharoor, were present there (at the book launch where Khurshid made the remark) and they in a way supported that statement,” he pointed out. He added that when Rahul Gandhi travels abroad, he secretly meets people and speaks against India.

In a sharp reaction, BJP MP Giriraj Singh accused the opposition of playing the role of ‘tukde-tukde’ gang. “I know he (Salman Khurshid) spoke after being instructed by Rahul Gandhi. It shouldn’t be forgotten that whenever someone tried to become Aurangzeb in the country, a Maharana Pratap had also emerged,” he added.

Launching a scathing attack, Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu said Khurshid “should go to Bangladesh.” BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticised Congress saying that it was “inciting violence” and “undermining Bharat’s democratic institutions”.

In a post on X, Poonawalla wrote, “In their hatred for Modi they hate Bharat. Salman Khursheed / Congress draws parallel & incites / prays for violence of Bangladesh to take place in Bharat? Does he want Hindus to be attacked in Bharat? Who is he signalling to? His family already said Vote Jihad once..now actual violence? Is this not undermining of Bharat’s democratic institutions? Not the first time they put Rajniti above Rashtra niti…Will Congress act on him?”

What did Salman Khurshid say?

At a book launch event, the former Union minister said, “Everything may look normal in Kashmir. Everything may look normal here. We may be celebrating the victory, although some people believe that victory or success in 2024 was perhaps only marginal, and a lot more needs to be done.”

“The fact remains that beneath the surface, there is something,” he said. “What’s happened in Bangladesh could happen here… the spread in our country prevents things from blowing up in the manner they have in Bangladesh.”
