Chennai: A controversy has erupted after the Tamil Thai vazhthu, (the state anthem) was sung incorrectly at a government program attended by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin at the Chennai Secretariat on Friday. Union Minister of State Dr L Murugan questioned whether Udhayanidhi Stalin would resign over the issue, drawing parallels with Governor RN Ravi’s similar incident.
The program, held to award certificates to trainees of the Chief Minister’s Innovation Program, saw Udhayanidhi Stalin asking the singers to repeat the Tamil Thai vazhthu after initial technical issues. However, the second rendition was also incorrect, sparking criticism from opposition parties.

Coimbatore South Constituency MLA Vanathi Srinivasan lambasted Udhayanidhi Stalin, questioning his qualifications to continue as Deputy Chief Minister and his commitment to protecting the Tamil language. She tweeted, “What qualification do you have to continue as Deputy Chief Minister who fails to ensure our Tamil Thai greeting is properly sung at your function?”

Udhayanidhi Stalin clarified that the mistake was due to a microphone malfunction, stating, “No one sings the Tamil mother’s greetings wrongly. When they were singing, there was a technical fault, and no one could hear what they were singing at 2-3 places.” He explained that the singers were asked to start again due to the technical issue.
The incident has reignited tensions between the ruling DMK and opposition parties, particularly the BJP. The controversy comes on the heels of a similar incident involving Governor RN Ravi, where Chief Minister MK Stalin demanded his resignation over the incorrect singing of the Tamil Thai greeting.
The opposition is now demanding Udhayanidhi Stalin’s resignation, citing his failure to ensure the proper singing of the Tamil Thai vazhthu. The controversy has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many questioning the Deputy Chief Minister’s commitment to Tamil Nadu state anthem.
