Dehradun: The Uniform Civil Code may officially come into force in Uttarakhand from the Republic Day on January 26. The state machinery remains busy in simplifying the proposed rules for the people.
The government may reduce the amount of penalty in the proposed rules. Expert committee has submitted the final draft of the UCC in both languages.
Making the language of different provisions simple for the people
The government machinery is in favour of making several provisions simple for the benefits of the people. Many of the provisions in the final draft are in difficult language. So, the government wants to make the language of such provisions simple.
Government may reduce the registration charges for marriage, divorce, and live-in relationship
Besides, the government also considers reducing the charges for registration of the marriage, the divorce, the succession, and the live-in relationship. The government may fix a charge of rupees 100 or 200 for the marriage registration. There is also provision for collecting late fees if there is delay in the registration of marriage, divorce, and live-in relationship. The government is reportedly reviewing the registration fees for different purposes mentioned in the final draft.
Before its final publication, the draft will be sent to CM
After the changes being made in the proposed rule, the final draft will be sent to the chief Pushkar Singh Dhami for his approval before it is finally published. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has already announced that the Uniform Civil Code will come into force in the hill state from January 2025.
Expert committee submitted its final report in October 2024
Former chief secretary of the state Shatrughan Singh, who headed the expert committee to frame the rules for the implementation of the UCC in Uttarakhand, had submitted its final report to the state government in October 2024. Subsequently, the state’s home department was tasked to start its preparation for the proper implementation of the UCC across the state.
Mandatory registration of all marriages, and live-in relationships
The UCC makes registration of all marriages, and live-in relationships mandatory. A portal has been created to inform people about different provisions of the new law. Uttarakhand is set to become the country’s first state to implement the UCC after the independence.
