Haridwar: On the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami reiterated his government’s commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), calling it a step towards realising Dr BR Ambedkar’s dream of a just and equal society. He was speaking at the ‘Uniform Civil Code – Gratitude Conference’ organised by the Dr BR Ambedkar Mahamanch in Haridwar.
“Babasaheb Ambedkar’s entire life is his message. Through his knowledge and determination, he not only transformed his own life but also uplifted millions from the depressed classes,” Dhami said, praising Ambedkar’s contribution to the Constitution of India.
Uttarakhand leads UCC push
Highlighting the importance of equality and justice, the chief minister said, “In the Preamble, Babasaheb ensured that justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity would be the foundational pillars of our Republic.” Dhami said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Uttarakhand has become the first state to move towards implementing the UCC, fulfilling the vision enshrined in Article 44 of the Directive Principles of State Policy.
‘UCC key to equality’
“Babasaheb understood that a Uniform Civil Code was not only a legal necessity but also a social and moral requirement. He believed all citizens should be governed by the same laws, regardless of religion, caste or community,” Dhami said, arguing that personal laws have often led to “discrimination, inequality, and injustice.” Quoting Ambedkar, he added, “I measure the progress of a community by the degree of progress women have achieved,” underscoring the UCC’s potential to advance gender justice.
