Two SSP rank officers of Jammu and Kashmir police resign; might contest assembly polls

New Delhi: Two SSP rank officers of Jammu and Kashmir police have tendered their resignation amid speculation that they might contest the state assembly elections, due in the next couple of months.

Mohanlal Kath had resigned on 31 July, but it is yet to be approved by the Home Department, while, another officer Mohan Lal resigned today.

Speculations are rife that both would contest the assembly elections.

Meanwhile, officials from Election Commission of India (ECI) today reached Srinagar to take stock of the situation. They might announce the schedule in a week or two.

“An ECI delegation led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr Sukhbir Singh Sandhu arrived at Srinagar today to review poll preparedness in J&K,” said ECI in a statement.

Leaders of various political parties also arrived at Sher- i-Kashmir International Conference Centre to meet with officials of the ECI.

“We want that Assembly elections should be held at the earliest. BJP is prepared for the elections. We have certain concerns regarding security and phasing of the elections,” said J&K BJP Chief Spokesperson Sunil Sethi, while talking to news agency ANI.
