New Delhi: Delhi High Court Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya on Friday (February 21) administered oath of office to two new judges – Justices Renu Bhatnagar and Rajneesh Kumar Gupta – at a swearing-in ceremony held in the premises of the high court.
Justices Bhatnagar and Justice Gupta were earlier serving as judicial officers in the national capital before their elevation to the Delhi High Court.
Strength of Delhi High Court has risen to 41 now
The sanctioned strength of the High Court is 60 and with Justices Bhatnagar and Justice Gupta, the strength has risen to 41.
Chief Justice Upadhyaya congratulated and welcomed both the new judges on taking oath of office.
“Congratulations. Welcome to our high court,” Chief Justice Upadhyaya said after administering both the judges oath.
Centre on February 19 notified the appointments
The Centre had on February 19 notified the two new appointments following recommendation made by the Supreme Court collegium for their elevation to the High Court early this month.
“In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint (i) Smt. Renu Bhatnagar and (ii) Shri Rajneesh Kumar Gupta to be judges of the Delhi High Court with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices,” the government notification read.
Supreme Court collegium recommended their names on February 5
Earlier, the Supreme Court collegium in a meeting held on February 5 recommended their names for their elevation to the Delhi High Court.
“The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 05th February, 2025 has approved the proposal for appointment of the following Judicial Officers, as Judges of the High Court of Delhi: (i) Ms. Renu Bhatnagar, and (ii) Shri Rajneesh Kumar Gupta,” the Supreme Court collegium said in a statement while recommending their names for appointment as the Delhi High Court judges.
