New Delhi: President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday announced the appointment of Peter Navarro as senior counsellor for trade and manufacturing in his upcoming administration. The announcement was made on Truth Social, Trump’s social media platform, where he praised Navarro’s expertise and contributions during his first term.
“During my first term, few were as effective or determined as Peter in upholding my two sacred principles: Buy American, Hire American,” Trump stated. He added that the new role would utilise Navarro’s extensive experience in policy analysis and media.
Navarro, who served as the director of the White House National Trade Council during Trump’s first presidency, was recently released from prison after serving a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. He was convicted of defying a subpoena from the House committee investigating the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack. Describing his conviction as politically motivated, Navarro told supporters at the Republican National Convention in July, “I went to prison so you won’t have to.”
Other key appointments
In addition to Navarro, Trump has named Michael Whatley as chairman of the Republican National Committee. Whatley worked closely with Lara Trump, the wife of Eric Trump, during the election.
Trump also announced several other key nominations, including Daniel Driscoll as Army Secretary, Jared Isaacman as NASA Administrator, and Adam Boehler as Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs.
These appointments reflect Trump’s focus on assembling a team with prior White House experience and a commitment to his policy priorities. As his second term approaches, Trump’s picks signal a continuation of his “America First” agenda in trade, manufacturing, and governance.
