New Delhi: In a shocking turn of events, a 23-year-old man lost his life on Monday after jumping off the elevated Mayur Vihar Phase-1 metro station in East Delhi. The incident, reported around 11 am, sent shockwaves through the local community and added to the growing list of suicide-related cases across the Delhi Metro network. The man was seen jumping off an elevated platform at the Metro Station.
The deceased, who has been identified as G Abhishek Rao, was said to be a resident of Mayur Vihar-1 near Ganga Market. According to police, Rao jumped from the platform onto the footpath below although the motive behind this drastic step is not yet clear. Metro officials acted swiftly and rushed him to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital in a PCR van, but despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
A police team reached the scene immediately after receiving a distress call from the control room. In a statement, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) confirmed the incident. No suicide note was recovered from the scene, which is why the motive remains unknown. Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
The deceased’s family has been informed and is currently being interviewed to uncover any possible reasons behind the tragic step. Unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated incident to have occurred in recent times. Delhi Metro has seen a spike in similar cases in recent months. From Lok Kalyan Marg to Tagore Garden, the list continues to grow, and each story is a stark reminder of the growing mental health crisis.
