New Delhi: Chhath Puja is a significant festival celebrated by the people of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. This festival spans four days and involves various rituals, including fasting, offerings, and prayers to ensure the well-being and prosperity of families. The first day of the festival is known as Nahay Khay, where people offer prayers and indulge in fasting.

What to do on Nahay Khay?
On the first day of Chhath Puja, also known as Nahay Khay people wake up early in the morning and take the holy bath to detox the body of all the impurities. After taking the bath, people at home prepare various kinds of food to prepare a feast, and Kaddu Bhaat is the most important as it is served to Lord Surya (Sun). Families gather together to share the meal, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.
Recipe for Kaddu Bhaat
Here is an easy and traditional recipe to prepare kaddu bhaat at home this Chhath Puja.
Ingredients for Kaddu Bhaat
- 2 cups basmati rice (or any long-grain rice)
- 500 grams pumpkin (Kaddu), peeled and cubed
- 1-2 green chillies, slit
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 2-3 tablespoons ghee or oil
- 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
- Salt to taste
- 4 cups water
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
- A pinch of turmeric powder
- Lemon juice for a tangy flavour
Steps to prepare Kaddu Bhaat at home:
- Wash basmati rice properly under the running water and soak for 30 minutes.
- Peel and cube the pumpkin into small pieces and set aside.
- Take a large pressure cooker and add ghee or oil to it.
- Add cumin seeds to the oil.
- Add the grated ginger and slit green chillies. Sauté for a minute.
- Now add cubed pumpkin saute it well for 10 minutes and add turmeric.
- Stir in the soaked and drained rice, mixing it well with the pumpkin and spices.
- Pour in 4 cups of water and salt to taste along with lemon juice to taste.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 2 whistles.
- Serve hot with fresh coriander.
